“Make mental health and well-being for all a global priority” is the theme of World Mental Health Day this year set by World Health Organisation.

World Mental Health Day commemorates awareness of mental health and the need for treatment of mental illness.

Today is October 10 – World Mental Health Day. Since the early 1990s, when the World Federation of Mental Health officially declared Mental Health Day, many studies and discussions have been conducted about mental health. But even today, a section does not know much about the importance of mental health. As vital as physical health is mental wellness. Keeping one’s mental health in check is crucial.

Studies show that at least one in eight suffer from mental health problems. Experts also say there has been a 25 per cent increase in the prevalence of anxiety and depression following Covid. While covid disrupted people’s daily lives, it also affected them mentally.

Perhaps the whole world has gone through a tremendous psychological crisis that has never been seen before. Experts say that the economic crisis created by the epidemic has pushed many people into depression and suicidal tendencies. According to the World Health Organization, one in seven adolescents between the ages of 10 and 19 lives with some mental health problem.

One should be aware of the following mental illness symptoms:

  • Excessive anger
  • Hyperactivity in some
  • Isolation from society
  • Involved character
  • Denial attitude
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Irrational fear
  • mental health may also relate alcohol and drug use to mental health.

Those with the above symptoms should not be considered affected. But those with these symptoms should seek medical attention and be prepared to undergo the necessary tests.

As we strive for the health of the body, let us also try a little for the health of the mind. Being creative and positive and building faith and hope are vital to maintaining mental health. One can do cognitive therapy, meditation, open writing, and other psychotherapies with the help of professionals.

Assess yourself, seek feedback from others, understand how you are performing daily activities and responsibilities, and identify whether you are under stress or need help from others.
